The Back of Napkin (Summry)
The main points in the book “The Back of Napkin” summarized by me
the 4 steps of visual thinking
1- Look = Collecting & screening with 4 tasks Orientation , Position , Identification, Direction with 4 rules
#1 Collect everything possible up front
#2 Lay it all where you can look at it
#3 Establish the underlying information coordinates using the 6W’s
#4 Practice visual triage with ( proximity , color, size , orientation , direction ,shape , shading )
2- See = Selecting & clumping
3- Imagine = Seeing what isn’t there
4- Show = Making it all clear The 5 focusing questions SQVID
1- Simple or elaborate
2- Quality or Quantity
3- Vision or Execution
4- Individual or Combination
5- Change or As-is The 6 ways we see (& show)
1- who / what ? (portrait ) Challenges relates to: Physical traits of Objects (things, people & roles)
2- how much ? (chart ) Challenges relates to: Relative Quantaties (measuring & counting)
3- where ? (map ) Challenges relates to: Position in space (Directions & how things fit together)
4- when ? (time-line ) Challenges relates to: Position in time( Scafuling & Timing)
5- how ? (flowchart) Challenges relates to: Cause & Effect (How things influence one another)
6- why ? (multi-variable plot) Challenges relates to: All of this come together. ( seeing the big picture) who/what + how many+ where = how
The 3 steps of showing
1- Select the right framework
2- Use the framework to creat the picture
3- Present & explain the picture
What defines a showing framework
1- What the framework shows
2- The framework’s underlying coordinate system
3- The relationship between the objects contained within the frame work
4- The framework starting point
Portraits rules of thumb:
1- Think simple
2- Illuminate lists
3- Visually describe
Charts rules of thumb:
1- It’s the data that matters, so let it show
2- Pick the simplest model to make your point(bars, lines, pies & bubbles)
Bars : to compare absolute quantities
Lines :to compare absolute quantities between 2 criteria or times
Pies : to compare relative quantities of something
Bubbles : to compare more than 2 variables
3- If you start with one modle, stay with one model
Maps : rules of thumb
1- Everything has a geography
2- North is a state of mind
3- Look beyond the obvious hierarchy
Time-lines : rules of thumb
1- Time is a one way street
2- Repeating time-line svcreat life cycles
3- Round versus linear
Multi-variable plots: rules of thump
1- Multi-variable plots aren’t hard to make but they do required patience , practice & a point
2- Medium-thick soup is best (the right number of variables)
3- Anything can be mapped to anything els, but (correlation <> causation)
The four steps of selling an idea with pictures
1- Start looking aloud : what the picture all about? what’s included and what is not? what are the coordinates & dimensions?
2- Keep seeing aloud : What are there most important things that stand out? how do they interact? is there is a pattern emerging? is there is anything critical that we don’t see?
3- Continue by imagining aloud : How can we manipulate or take advantagevof emerging patterns? arr there open opportunities? what is not visible here? where have we seen thus before?
4- Close by showing aloud : this is what we think it all means. do you see the same things ? this what we our options are do we agree?
There- Four – Five – Six : the visual thinking swiss army knife
